Civil Litigation Attorney - ASSOCIATE

Our Civil Litigation Practice Group aggressively defends a wide variety of clients and cases throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia in all state and federal courts. 

Our Attorneys work in a team environment that is fast-paced, high-pressured and deadline intensive.  Our Attorneys must possess strong verbal and written communication, research, organizational and analytical skills. They should be detail-oriented and results-driven team players.

Successful candidates will have demonstrable analytical and problem solving skills, superior research and writing skills and reading comprehension at an advanced level.

The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of experience.  Admission to Virginia state bar is required. Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills are a must. 

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Managing multiple cases from file opening to hearing.
  • Consult with clients and represent clients in trial.
  • Drafting briefs and other legal documents.
  • Drafting discovery responses and complaints.
  • Interviewing key witnesses.
  • Conducting depositions.
  • Gathering evidence to be used at trial.
  • Develop legal arguments, motions and other case filings.
  • Manage/access case file indexing system for all ongoing and completed cases.
  • Monitor changes to government guidelines or regulations and submit reports on pertinent changes.
  • Utilize existing files and a variety of other research resources to develop information for pending cases.
  • Prolonged sitting, reading, typing, writing and talking.

LEGAL SECRETARY - IMMIGRATION PRACTICE GROUP

We are seeking a Legal Secretary to join our Immigration practice group.

Responsibilities include various types of document preparation, file management, calendaring and daily interaction with attorneys and paralegals, local universities and governmental agencies.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, a record of dependability, flexibility and the ability to work with a diverse group of people. Required skills include Microsoft Office at an advanced level, transcribing dictation, accurate proofreading and grammar and the ability to understand written and verbal directions.

Candidates must possess strong written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in this fast paced environment.

Successful candidates will have a minimum of 5 years of administrative experience in a legal environment.

Successful candidates will have demonstrable analytical and problem solving skills and be able to read and understand what they are reading at an advanced level.

A college degree or relevant, related experience is required.  Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills are a must. 

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Managing multiple cases from file opening to hearing
  • Drafting discovery responses and complaints
  • Create reports for attorneys based on case specifications and attorney requests.
  • Work with attorneys to develop legal arguments, motions and other case filings.
  • Develop a case file indexing system that can be used as an active archive for all ongoing and completed cases.
  • Monitor changes to government guidelines or regulations and submit reports on pertinent changes.
  • Utilize existing files and a variety of other research resources to develop information for pending cases.

Paralegal - Immigration Practice Group

The Immigration Practice Group at McCandlish Holton provides visa services and "day-to-day" immigration advice to businesses, colleges and universities, school systems, professors and researchers, and individuals across the country and around the world.  We advise U.S. and foreign clients on all aspects of obtaining U.S. work visas as well as the hiring and transfer of international personnel. 
We are seeking candidates who are detail oriented, energetic, accurate and able to handle a high volume of work in this busy, fast-paced department. 

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate, through previous experience, the ability to quickly respond to tight, often changing deadlines; they will be detail oriented, energetic, accurate and able to handle a high volume of work in this busy, fast-paced department.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Utilize existing files and a variety of other research resources to develop information for pending cases.
  • Typing and editing documents.
  • Communicating with clients in writing, via phone and in person. 
  • Manage multiple cases from file opening to submission.
  • Prolonged sitting, walking and reaching.

Paralegal experience is not required for the right person who fulfills our requirements above. College degree is preferred with one year of work experience.
