Tom was the founding member of the firm and has served as its Chairman for over three decades. Over the course of his career, Tom has led the firm's Corporate and Health Care Group as well as its International Practice Group. Under Tom's leadership, the firm operated a branch office in China for over 15 years beginning in 1995 as one of the first twelve US law firms approved by the Chinese government. McCandlish Holton continues to serve the international needs of its clients in China and elsewhere through membership in Lawyers Associated Worldwide, an international network of law firms around the globe.
Tom currently focuses his practice on serving as a legal and strategic advisor to selected privately held companies, primarily startup and growth companies in the technology and health care sectors. He has extensive experience in structuring and negotiating complex transactions, including in particular:
- Equity and debt financing transactions
- Intellectual Property licensing transactions
- International transactions
- Strategic mergers and acquisitions
- Structured resolution of Intellectual Property and commercial disputes
Tom is also an active private equity investor and strategic advisor focusing on companies in the medical device and technology sectors and in commercial real estate, including senior housing development.
Tom has served on the Board of Visitors of Virginia Commonwealth University and on the Board of Directors of the VCU Intellectual Property Foundation. He is a member of the Society of International Fellows (SIBF) and is immediate past Chairman of the Global Network Foundation affiliated with SIBF.
