Meet Imie Harber

(And Her Family Too!)

In 2021, I made a big change from being in-house field counsel for eight years with one of the country’s largest insurance providers to joining McCandlish Holton’s civil litigation practice group.

Building on my experience in-house, my current practice continues to focus on general civil liability defense, including products liability and premises liability, as well as workers’ compensation, commercial litigation, and serving as general counsel.

I have conducted numerous bench and jury trials in general district, circuit court, and in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, and, participated in appellate proceedings before the Court of Appeals of Virginia.

Yet, just as critical to my practice as trying cases, is my extensive experience with settlement negotiations and ADR practice, such as mediation and arbitration.

Some outcomes I’ve obtained:

  • Successfully argued for the admissibility of a defense billing expert to challenge the amount in medical bills claimed by the plaintiff in Circuit Court.
  • Successfully argued a pretrial motion in City of Richmond Circuit Court, dismissing a $500,000 personal injury action brought against a local government agency by an individual in the custody of the agency.
  • Obtained defense jury verdict in Nottoway County Circuit Court awarding $0 in damages in a single vehicle, personal injury claim for $300,000 in which defendant stipulated to liability. Following the verdict, Imie successfully opposed plaintiff’s motion for additur, thereby upholding the $0 jury verdict award.
  • Obtained a defense verdict from a jury in a slip and fall claim brought against a national restaurant chain in Hanover County, Virginia.
  • Negotiated a $5,000 settlement on behalf of a national hotel chain sued in federal court for $5 million alleging negligence against the hotel.
  •

We Stay Busy

Exploring with our littles

My husband, Jeff, and I are dedicated to donating to causes like Goodwill and the Salvation Army.

Our boys, Julian is four, and Gabriel is two, keep us active and on-the-go. We’re often exploring the many hiking trails and parks Virginia has to offer, or learning new things at the Children’s Museum. Travel means a lot to our family, so quick trips to our Nation’s capital, are also a favorite adventure for us.

Giving Back is a Family Affair

It all starts with education

My father immigrated to New York from Nigeria, and met my mother while they were students at Cornell University.

My three brothers are graduates of Worcester State University (WSU), where my father taught as a professor, and have earned an MD, PhD, and J.D.

I am a graduate of the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, and have a J.D.

In 2016, my family was celebrated by WSU in an event that raised scholarship funds for an underrepresented student whose goal is to work in the Worcester public school (WPS) system.
