Scott is an experienced trial lawyer. He is Chair of the firm's Litigation Practice Group. He also leads the Workers' Compensation Section. Scott currently serves as President of McCandlish Holton and is a member of its Executive Committee.
Scott is admitted to practice in all Virginia courts, the U.S. District Courts for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He handles all aspects of commercial litigation, including disputes involving employment matters; covenants not to compete; contracts; premises and product liability; personal injuries and wrongful death.
Scott has significant jury and bench trial experience in state and federal courts. He also has considerable appellate experience and has argued numerous matters before the Court of Appeals of Virginia, the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Scott also regularly represents employers before the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission. Scott also has expertise frequently representing clients in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration.
Scott was lead trial counsel for the third largest reported Virginia defense judgment for 2003, Smiths v. Sherwin Williams, et al., a $2.5 million aerosol can product liability case (the Fourth Circuit affirmed the District Court's entry of summary judgment).
Scott is active in his community. He is a current participant in the 2007 class of Lead Virginia, a group of selected leaders from across Virginia addressing solutions to state-wide issues. Scott is a 2005 graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond, a community leadership program comprised of selected local leaders addressing issues important to the growth, development and future of the Richmond region. He served on the Board of Directors for SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) from 2002 until 2007.
Scott currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Litigation Section of the Virginia State Bar.
Scott was recognized by Virginia Business, based upon nominations from fellow members of the Bar, as one of Virginia's “Legal Elite” in the category of Civil Litigation in 2005 and 2006. In 2007 he was recognized in Richmond Magazine as one of Virginia's "Rising Stars" in the category of General Litigation based upon nominations from fellow members of the Bar. Scott was among seven lawyers selected from across the Commonwealth for this category. Scott was selected by Inside Business magazine as one of the "Top 40 Under 40" in 2001, an award presented to the top young business leaders in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area.
